If you pour yourself a drink from the tap, you are filling up your glass with toxins and chemicals. This is the unfortunate truth about the United State’s water quality. In that glass of water, there are many “forever chemicals”, such as PFAS and other toxic substances like arsenic, chromium, and lead. These toxins found in your water can come from various sources such as industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and improper disposal of household chemicals.
The reasons that the quality of our water matters is because exposure to the toxins can cause long-term health conditions. Certain toxins, such as endocrine disruptors, can interfere with the body’s natural hormone system and lead to adverse health effects, such as infertility or miscarriage.
So, what can we do about it?
In 2017, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) published one of the first databases that shows water pollutants by location across the US. You can use this database to fill in your zip code and find out what exactly is in your home’s water. My goal is to help you make this change as easily as possible to improve your long-term health.
Implementing a water filter into your home is one of the best investments you can make in for your health. Water filters can remove the common contaminants found on the EWG’s database, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals, and heavy metals.
Here are my top 3 water filter recommendations:
Think of this as an improved version of the Brita filter. The pitcher is convenient if you prefer to fill it up and keep it on your countertop or in the fridge. This is the best value in the short-term, however, if you plan to stay in your home for the long-term, you could consider an in-home water filter instead.
2. Watts Premier Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier System
This filter can be installed under your sink and is the best option long-term. The installation is a process but after that, the maintenance is extremely light. One thing to note, if you are going to choose a reverse osmosis water filter, make sure you are incorporating minerals into your diet as this filter will deplete the minerals in natural occurring in water. I would recommend taking an electrolyte powder, like Re-Lyte, or Trace Minerals daily.
This filter is easily installed and will filter out most impurities. This is a great option if affordability is one of your main objectives and you want to start on reducing your toxic load without breaking the bank!
